Chef Soraya Seven-Layer Dip
A seven-layer dip is the ultimate Super Bowl party appetizer that almost everyone is sure to enjoy. It’s a classic Tex Mex style dish yet no two dips are exactly alike. Our seven-layer dip starts with something a little different, and that is a Chef Soraya bowl. We chose the Chipotle Black Beans and Rice flavor to start off this colorful dish. It provides a base rich in nutrients as well as a whole lot of flavor.
You may recall most seven-layer dips starting with a layer of refried beans. This is where the Chef Soraya bowl comes in. We’ve replaced that layer with our own rice and bean bowl and we may never go back to regular refried beans again. Once you’ve re-hydrated your bowl, we recommend at least two bowls to feed an entire party, you’ll simply spread it on the bottom of a glass 9”x13” pan. The size of the container is flexible based on how many people you want to feed and what you have on hand. Really anything will do, a glass dish makes a better presentation so you can see every layer of your seven-layer dip, and we recommend a wider dish so that the layers are spread thinner. That way, with every dip you get all seven layers with a crunchy chip.
The next layer will be your guacamole. You can use store bought guacamole or you can easily make your own fresh guacamole. Making guacamole is simple. You will need 3-4 rip avocados. Once you’ve opened them up and removed the pit you can scrape the avocado from its skin and into a bowl. Next, you’ll add the juice of 1-2 limes depending on size. The citric acid will keep the avocados from turning brown and will also add a nice zing. Add more to taste. The rest of the ingredients are a matter of taste as well, but we like to make ours with minced garlic, finely diced red onion, chopped cilantro, salt and a little diced jalapeno for heat.
After you’ve added your guacamole to the dip, you can add your sour cream. You can add dairy or non-dairy sour cream depending upon your diet or you can omit this layer all together. If you’d like to add a little more spice to this layer, you can stir a little seasoning into the sour cream. We use Colorado Spice Tomato Basil and Chipotle blend. With tomato, garlic, chili pepper and other spices, it adds a little more flavor and pairs well with the Chipotle Black Bean and Rice bowl.
The next layer you’ll want to add is the salsa. Again, you can use store bought salsa or easily make your own. All you need for a simple salsa is diced tomato, finely diced onion, minced garlic, chopped cilantro, lime juice, salt and pepper, and jalapeno to taste. You could also add green chilies for more heat, just make sure you remove the seeds and membrane, and wear gloves while you’re handling them.
To top it off you have many options. We used Mexican blend shredded cheese. You can easily skip this step if it does not suite your diet and replace it with something that does. Next we added diced tomatoes, sliced black olives, diced green onions, and fresh cilantro. Now you can dig in with a tortilla chip and you’re ready to watch the game!
